TRAINING SCHEDULE

Day 1 - Wednesday, July 30th –

1.  8:30 A.M. – Noon

911: Not Just Another Pretty Face –

“9-1-1 dispatcher falls asleep – why do we have to pay $0.40 a month to support a bunch of bureaucratic losers.”

“That OnStar system is awesome, they can even unlock your car.  It is definitely worth $15 per month.”

Each day 9-1-1 handles tens of thousands of calls flawlessly, many of those calls involving life and death situations.  Yet we only hear about the negative incidents in the news causing even prominent journalists to say our profession is right up there with used car salesmen.

Gregg Smith, a marketing expert from the Lawton Gallagher Group of Traverse City teams up with Steve Asplund, a news anchor for WLUC TV-6 in Marquette to discuss how we can not only present a better image, but also effectively use damage control when things go wrong.

2.      1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Strategic Planning –

A great follow up to the morning session is a discussion about important planning for your operation and how to get support for your future plans.  Tim Smith, Executive Director of Ottawa County Central Dispatch Authority, will discuss how he used strategic planning to develop the necessary support and resources for his new multi-million dollar dispatch center and how planning keeps his operation on track

Day 2 - Thursday, July 31st  -

1.      8:30 a.m. – Noon and 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

NG 9-1-1 – Oakland County and Beyond

Advanced Wireless Telecom will describe the Oakland County Project that is scheduled for implementation this year to move 9-1-1 into the IP world.  They will also discuss what 9-1-1 centers should and should not be doing in preparation for NG 9-1-1.  After lunch, Doug Van Essen will join the discussion to examine the political and economic realities of NG 9-1-1 and how they may be far different from where we are today.  We will also discuss the role of 9-1-1 professionals and MCDA in helping develop the blueprint for 9-1-1 in Michigan.

2.      2:15 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

9-1-1 Legal Update –

Doug Van Essen will review the changes in the 9-1-1 laws that take effect on July 1st and what is taking place with regard to current legal challenges, proposed legislation, etc.
